The Comrades Novice Interview - Schizelle Theron

When did you first put on a pair of running shoes and head out the door?
ST: I was an intermittent social runner all my life. I started running more seriously in 2010.

Do you remember how bad that first run felt?
ST: I remember very well! Me and Ivette ran the Shandon hills, but kept feeling exhausted! Running with the club certainly helped!

Do you realise that you might feel like that again at the end of Comrades?
ST: No- not the same type of exhaustion….but exhausted for sure!

Which event and when was your first road race?
ST: Think it was Hall’s 10km. ?2011.

What inspired you that you had to run Comrades - even if it was 'just once'?

ST: Turning 40!

Do you realise that you probably won't run this race 'just once'?
ST: Jip- no denying it… Will see though how I feel and the body copes. Keep an open mind.

Who has inspired you along your journey to Comrades 2015?
ST: Everybody who has done it before!!

Who is your Comrades hero?
ST: Hero?? Hmmm can’t say I do the hero thing…

Who is supporting you on the side of the road on race day?
ST: My hubby Paul. He is my rock!!

Have your supporters accepted the fact that you might be grumpy, unfriendly and miserable when they see you along the route, and that they just need to 'let it be'?
ST: Will tell him!

What lesson have you learned from running that you will definitely be implementing on 31 May?
ST: Take it easy. Keep moving forward. Walk some on the uphills…
Life lesson: Nothing is impossible! Recently heard of a guy who has 30% lung function due to Cystic Fibrosis who completed the Comrades.

What horror story have you heard that you fear most might happen to you during the race?
ST: Hmmm I don’t know?? Maybe legs buckling the last stretch and not finishing…

What advice can you give a non-runner, who might be aiming for their first 10km?
ST: Just keep going, it gets better!! And then you don’t want to stop!

What do you think you might think about over the 88km between Durban and Pietermaritzburg?
ST: What a question… many things. And hopefully me and Adele will run together, and she always has lots to talk about!

What part of the Comrades route are you fearing most?

ST: The last 20km!

How do you plan to celebrate your first Comrades medal?
ST: With proper champagne!

When will your next run be after Comrades?
ST: If all is ok- maybe 2-3 weeks.

Thanks Schizelle, all the best and enjoy!

The Comrades Novice Interview - Karin Cilliers

When did you first put on a pair of running shoes and head out the door?
KC: The first ever run I joined with the club was the Muffin Run 2012. Maybe the remote possibility of being rewarded with muffins kept me going through the first winter! From there it became easy .. a way of life.

Do you remember how bad that first run felt?
KCNo there were  muffins.

Do you realise that you might feel like that again at the end of Comrades?

KCOh no, will have to take a muffin then…

Which event and when was your first road race?
KCPWC 10km, probably around 2002.

What inspired you that you had to run Comrades - even if it was 'just once'?

KCI watched Comrades on the television since I was very young and always felt quite sure deep down somewhere that this was something I would want to do one day.

Do you realise that you probably won't run this race 'just once'?
KCI think I realise this, although I promised my husband that it would only be this once to celebrate turning 40.. but I know myself and will probably be back for (many) more – I think deep down my husband also knows this and will (have to) grow to accept it.

Who has inspired you along your journey to Comrades 2015?

KCMy experienced Comrades friends Adriaan, Petro, Vanessa, Elsa, Adele & Arina.

Who is your Comrades hero?
KC40 Consecutive Comrades Runner Barry Holland – reading his book at the moment .. wow.

Who is supporting you on the side of the road on race day?
KCMy husband Arnoldt.

Have your supporters accepted the fact that you might be grumpy, unfriendly and miserable when they see you along the route, and that they just need to 'let it be'?
KC: Luckily Arrie was there when I had two babies and I wasn’t very nice to him then.. can Comrades be worse than that?

What lesson have you learned from running that you will definitely be implementing on 31 May?
KCDon’t start too fast, there’s a really freakin long way to go..

What horror story have you heard that you fear most might happen to you during the race?
KCPeople dying during and after the race – no pain killers of any kind for me thanks!

What advice can you give a non-runner, who might be aiming for their first 10km?

KCBegin with a two minute jog and a two minute walk for 20 minutes and build from there, before you know it you will be running a 10km.

What do you think you might think about over the 88km between Durban and Pietermaritzburg
KCGod… Love… Life … Pace… The Finish.

What part of the Comrades route are you fearing most?

KCThe first 40km and the last 48km.

How do you plan to celebrate your first Comrades medal?
KCMilkshake and Pizza.

When will your next run be after Comrades?
KCWill wait till my body tells me it’s ready to go!

Thanks Karin, all the best and enjoy!

Route Description:
Difficulty Rating: 3. Route Type: Circular
The race starts at the Sudwala Lodge and heads out on a scenic route starting with a gentle yet steady five kilometre climb from the valley basin to the top of the pass, about 1,500 metres above sea level. Once at the top, enjoy the respite as the route descends to the turning point.

What follows is payment for all the hard work that went before, a pleasant five kilometre downhill canter with Mpumalanga’s scenery that is simply breathtaking. Soon enough you reach the valley basin with a jolt, for there is a steep scramble for almost 1.8 kilometres as the route takes you to the very mouth of the Sudwala Caves.

Take a deep breath; take your last look at Africa’s blue sky as you descend to the bowels of the earth to face the ‘Screaming Monster’. This enormous and now infamous formation resides inside the caves. Pay your respects here for legend has it that the Monster’s good fortune will smile on the lucky and the brave.

Now blinking in the sunlight, the race takes you on an easy trot down the mountain and back to the finish at the Sudwala Lodge.

Prizes and Give-Aways:
Category winners get prize money. Unique colour-coded medals go to all finishers.

The ‘Screaming Monster’ is named after a large and ancient calcium formation inside the Sudwala Caves. These are the oldest known dolomite caves in the world. This is the only run in South Africa that goes into a cave.

Race Report - Kosmos 3-in-1

The day came quicker than I could say Kosmos. For eighteen months I have been talking, dreaming and training, and suddenly race day was upon me, and I had to do this. We were 1012 entered into the 3-1, which is astonishing, as in my mind, I didn’t think there was that many crazy runners.

Race morning, we were greeted with a lovely overcast morning, every runners ideal day. I

did enter Comrades 2015, with the idea, if maybe I do qualify on this 42,2km, I would do the big C. At the start, I found the 5 hour bus, and thought, this is it, not only am I doing this, but Comrades here I come. With allot of anticipation in the air, a kiss good luck from Fanie and the gun went off at 6:00 for the 42,2km. The start was very slow, but once all the runners had their own pace, and I managed to get out of the crowd I caught my bus. My bus was doing between 6:20 – 6:40 a km, which in my mind was a little fast, but I am no bus driver and I have no knowledge of how fast or how slow they run. 21km into the run, my tour on the bus was over, I was cramping and feeling terrible, I had to make a decision. What was I doing? Running for a qualifier or running for 3 medals. A Hard lesson to learn all on your own, with still 21km to go, but lesson learned. I had 6 hours to finish, and I will use the 6 hours, if that is what it takes. The route was very flat, the only hill or downhill was the speed bumps. The water points were magnificent, and the highlight of each 2-3km, although I had to concentrate in not dehydrating or over hydrating. The best part of the 42,2km was the golden mile (the last km), next to the lake, hearing the music at the finish, and knowing I have finished the first race for the day. Fanie was waiting with a Steri Stampi, snack, big smile and a beer. I finished in a time of 5:28, and that meant I had to wait 1:30 before my next race.

After a powernap in the car, we heard the announcements and saw runners shuffling to

the start of the 21,1km. Nervous, me and Fanie walked/shuffled to the start, this will be the first time that I ever go further than 42,2km in one day, brand new territory for me. This is the only race that Fanie and I decided to do together as I was scared that I wouldnot make the cut off in 3 hours, and “Vinnige Fanie” will not allow for that to happen. The first few kilometres together on the road were awful, I hated every second with him, and he was not enjoying the race or time together, he was checking his watch every second, and putting me under pressure. We were bickering the whole time. We were running extremely slowly for Fanie, and I think that caused a groin pain for him, the best moment in the 21,1km for me, now I liked running with him. No checking time, just running. Now that we were running happily together, we realised we are not going to make the 3 hour cut off. A fellow runner heard us talking and gave us the best news ever, the cut off was 3:30. We just thought we found our “mojo”, when 6km into the race, it started to storm. Wet, cold and knowing my feet will never be the same; Fanie just kept keeping me positive. Fanie found a new breath; he suggested that we run 5 poles and walk one; we still had about 12km to go. He would run ahead of me, and as he passes each pole, put his hand in the air and show me number one, number two and so on, when he reaches number 5, he waits for me, we walk together, and off we go again. Before I knew it, we were in the golden mile for the 21,1km, he waited for me, and said he wanted to finish with me; we finished in a time of 3:21.

Only 30 minutes, and the last race for the day started. We started the race, still wet and cold from the rain in the 21,1km. From the word go, I decided I will run two lamp poles, and walk one, and I stuck to my plan, every step/run of the way. Each meter, was one meter closer to my goal, when I saw the 9km marker, I felt like 900m to go. Fanie did his own race, and he said he expected me to come in just before the cut off (which was 2 hours). At 1:38, I finished my race, and never in my life, have I had such an accomplished feeling, never have I done anything as hard or awesome, this was probably the best day of my life.
