Prizes and Give-Aways:
All category winners get gold medals. The next 30 finishers in all races receive silver and all other finishers go home with bronze medals. The first 100 entrants receive T-shirts.

Nelspruit Marathon Club are proud to announce that the 2014 running of the popular Kaapsehoop 3 in 1 Race will once again soon be staged in the warm heart of the Lowveld. Entries are now open and all runners (and walkers) are invited to participate in this scenic race.

The familiar and testing downhill course, which starts in the misty heights of the picturesque village of Kaapsehoop and follows a beautiful panoramic route down to Mbombela, will not only test the mettle of any athlete, but is also an early qualifier for both the 2015 Comrades and Two Oceans.

The finish line for all three races will be at the Mbombela Stadium – from which bus transport also departs to take athletes to their respective start points on the morning of the race. The stadium can accommodate all spectators, has more than enough toilet and shower facilities and offers ample secure parking, as well as easy access to the nearby N4. Of course, the stadium also has a lovely, shady picnic area for post-race socialising and that all important thirst-quenching cold beer after all your hard work!

The Kaapsehoop 3 in 1 race has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with a record number of runners taking part in the 2013 event. It is now the largest race in the Lowveld and the second largest in Mpumalanga. Due to the cancellation of the very popular Elands Valley Marathon earlier this year, the Kaapsehoop 3 in 1 now forms an even more vital part of every runner’s training when it come to downhill runs in warm temperatures. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please note that pre-entries for the Kaapsehoop 3 in 1 close on 17 October 2014 and race numbers for the pre-entries can only be collected at Mbombela Stadium on Friday, 31 October between 10:00 – 19:00, or on Saturday morning 03:00 – 05:00 or at the respective starting points (10km, 21.1km or 42.2km) of each race.

T-Shirts will be given to the first 800 pre-entries. Late entries are still possible at Mbombela Stadium on Friday, 31 October from 10:00 – 19:00 or on Saturday 1 November from 03:00 – 05:00, or at the respective starting points (10km, 21.1km or 42.2km) along the route from 04:30 on race day.

Walkers are Welcome

Route Description:
Difficulty Rating: 4. Route Type: Out and back

This is a fairly tough route, but the scenery more than makes up for any discomfort. The opening stages of the race are run along the Graskop - Ohrigstad road where the going is relatively easy, and the running is pleasantly undulating. The route then turns right to God's Window and the real work begins. There is a seven kilometre climb to the top of the hill and, to be sure, this reduces many a seasoned runner to a walk.

But what goes up must come down and the downhill section of this race is welcome. Beware! It is as steep and as long as the hill you have just climbed and can be hard on a tired and shaky body. The scenery on this run is spectacular, and with some luck there will be some morning mist to cool you down.

Upcoming Event - Boulders Marathon

Organisers: Onderberg Marathon Club
Date: 27 September 2014
Time: 06:00
Distance: 25; 10;
Start: 25km - Mara Turn-off from N4 (25km from Nelspruit towards Komatipoort)
Finish: Kaapmuiden Primary School

Entry Details:
Pre-entry Closing Date: 22 September 2014
www.enteronline.co.za
Late entries are taken at the start from 05h00 or at the finish in Kaapmuiden from 04h30.
Walkers are Welcome

Route Description:
This most scenic and unique race is run through the Crocodile Gorge Conservancy on the old Mara Road. The course starts with a steep and challenging seven-kilometre climb as you run up the Crocodile Gorge Mountains and onto the plateau. There is some respite here as the route flattens out before the steep, clattering descent towards Kaapmuiden. The race crosses the De Kaap River in the closing kilometres before the finish. This exceptionally scenic route is tarred all the way.

This is one of the favourite races run in the Lowveld and has always attracted a large field. In addition to the Boulders, the organisers host a 10-kilometre out and back run. There is something for the whole family to enjoy. Both the start and the finish venues are situated before the Nkomazi Toll. Runners coming from Nelspruit do not need to go through the tollgates. If you want to make a weekend of it, contact the Nelspruit Tourist Information at 013-7551988 for details of accommodation in the area.

Race Report - 2014 Nedbank Om Die Dammetjie

Runners get into spring at Witklip

A perfect Lowveld spring day greeted about 300 runners at the popular Om-die-Dammetjie race at Witklip Dam on Saturday 6 September.
This is one of few races, if not the only one in the Lowveld, in which people can enjoy a refreshing jog alongside water.
“I love this race,” said Nelspruit Marathon Club stalwart Owen McGee, “I try to participate every year no matter what.”
It was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Nedbank, which is a proud supporter of running nationally and has a strong relationship with Mpumalanga Athletics. This, together with the coordinated efforts of the Department of Water Affairs and Komatiland Forests (KLF), contributed to the event’s success. Athletes from as far as Gauteng, along with various local running clubs had a choice between the 10km and the more challenging 21km race.
Those who completed the latter for the first time agreed that the course seemed to be flat but still had its challenges, especially the hill climbs to the finish which proved to be a true test of stamina. Entries to the 10km have seen a growth this year with park runners challenging themselves to the next level. The winning podiums were hotly contested with the hosting club Nedbank LVCC (Lowveld Country Club) making a clean sweep in the male 21km.
Nelspruit Marathon Club, Legogote Villagers and Barberton Athletics Club were also well represented.
The race is run at the end of the fire season and it was therefore fitting that Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association took the gold medal for best water point, closely followed by Mozma’s Trading, KLF, First in Guards and Nedbank.
Nedbank LVCC would like to thank all Lowvelders who joined.

The Grandmaster who was a Vet - In loving memory of Comrades Number 3828, Dr. Duncan Christie

For many of our members, past and present, active or not so active Duncan was one of the most well- loved and cohesive members we have ever had the pleasure of sharing our running time on the road.

A run was never just a run with Duncan.  If you were with him with the morning group he was always one of the first cars waiting in the car park and would clap his hands together and get the run going stating simply “Right. It’s time to hit the road!”.  En route there was always time for a quick nature lesson and without even realising it within a couple of years of his company I started to realise I could identify a variety of bird calls and various Lowveld trees.   A run was always more exciting if buck were spotted, injured animals rescued from the side of the road or road kill identified!  The highlight of these being finding snakes along the run, which our resident herpetologist would take great joy in throwing at the likes of the Majolas as well as any shriek worthy victim.

Duncan loved the company of like paced “back of the pack” runners and always admiringly teased the “greyhounds” who led the pack. He would give everyone nicknames and enthusiastically followed everyone’s running progress and genuinely congratulate. Duncan’s sense of humour knew no bounds and he was awarded the prestigious “stirrer of the year” award several times over based on his politically incorrect but jesting commentary. He enthusiastically led debate as if his fellow male runners were bums or boobs men. Paid homage to the day of reconciliation by suggesting staged re-enactment of the Anglo-Zulu war and without realising it continually forged a unity within our ranks.

Duncan ran many races, most notably 3 Comrades marathons from 1999 to 2010 and helped several people to reach their own goals during this time. He exemplified the word Comrade with his positive vasbyt attitude. He was always available to help if his schedule allowed at races and sorted out   parking and handing out of medals in the most social of ways.

Whenever possible, Duncan loved bringing family along to join us at runs. We loved sharing time with them and most especially Skukuza where there was always fireside laughter red wine and “wegstappertjies” with Jakkie.

Even when Duncan’s knee halted his running he made the effort to pop in to time trial for a drink. He wanted to stay connected to the club and his running friends.

Duncan leaves a huge gap in our club.  He will be sorely missed. His legacy will remain in memories of a family man whose humour, commitment and strong sense of community were an example to all. Our thoughts are with Belle and the whole Christie Clan at this time.

Rest, so very well, in peace Duncan.
