Running In Circles Newsletter - December Christmas Edition

IN THIS ISSUE
YEAR END 80'S PARTY COMES ALIVE!  -  EHLANZENI SPORTS TOURISM DAY  -  HALLS PARKRUN

Chairman's Chatter

Hi Everyone,

This is our final RIC of 2013. And what an end to the year we had this last weekend!

Starting with the Ehlanzeni Run, which saw the highest prize money of a half marathon in Mpumalanga being awarded. Although numbers were affected by year end, the winners brought some professional class to the event. Durban based -Tanith Maxwell and Kenyan - Wesley Matau  took 1st place and commented that the course was testing but worth the journey.

Thank you to all of you who helped in whichever way possible. It is appreciated and makes our club the success it is.  EDM was happy with the partnership effort and I’m sure we will take this race to bigger and better. A huge thank you to Mozmas for the sponsoring of our new stand out start/finish inflatable arch which looks great!

The day turned out to be a long one for some of us. Working from early and partying till very late at the year end function. The 80’s theme really went down well, with special appearances from Axl, Madonna, Slash, Freddie Mercury, Kaptein Afro & Kiss Claasens to name a few. The club provided a great burger and ice-cream bar and the music was enjoyed by all.  We have attached a list of our year award winners and watch out for a photo special on the blog! Thank you to all those who took time out to help decorate, take photos and make an effort to make it such a success. Congratulations to all the award winners!

December runs are busy being scheduled so keep an eye on the calendar. We have scheduled jingle bells run for next week Wednesday and encourage everyone to bring all your old running gear/shoes/mags for development runners.

Time trial for December will be on a casual basis with the last officially timed one this Thursday. For those of you still around come run informally anyway for the remaining Thursdays which are not holidays.

Membership for 2014 has been finalized and the process and email will be sent to all members shortly.
Our AGM will be scheduled for early 2014 so we would encourage you to please all give your availability/suggestions to offer your services to the 2014 committee.

In closing let me take the opportunity to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas. If you travel over the season travel safe. Keep the Christmas indulgence balanced with the training and see you all in 2014.

Thanks for a great year cc!

Steve

LOSKOP 2014 CAMPING BOOKINGS

Believe it or not Forever Resorts Loskop Dam contacted us to say that club bookings for accommodation for the 2014 Loskop Marathon is now open. So it’s time to start planning your running calendar for 2014. As we did this year we would like to secure camping stands for our club members & their families, those who joined us this year had a great time (ok it was a bit wet) and it makes a great club weekend away.
The 2014 Loskop Marathon is on 12th April 2014, we will need to book the camp sites for 2 nights, Friday 11th & Sat 12th April. The cost works out to R180.00 per person for the weekend (Friday & Saturday night) children under 6 stay free. Please note that is just your camping fee and all other expenses are for your own account. Please respond to me at paul@fnorman.co.za with your name, contact number and amount of people in oder for us to secure the camping stands.

SATURDAY CLUB RUNS

The December Saturday morning club runs are the perfect time to get your training started or to stay active during the festive season. All the runs will be kept to around 20km to keep things not too hectic but still challenging enough. Sometime in January 2014 we will compile the Saturday morning runs for the first 6 months of the year. This will be based around the race calendar and with Comrades 2014 in mind. Although this will form part of the clubs training program for Comrades we will still try our best to accommodate all the runners in our club. If you would like to assist in setting up this training calendar please let me know, notice of when this will be done will be given closer to the time.
On closing I just want to remind everyone not to forget about the Drivers Donation on a Saturday morning, whoever the driver is gives up his/her time and motoring expense to make our runs easier & safer for us all, with the rise in fuel costs it’s not cheap anymore either, a minimum of R5.00 per runner is expected but more is always welcome. The donation is not checked but is based on trust and doing the right thing. So please don’t forget.

Yours in running,

Paul

Halls parkrun

Dear Running Club Member,

I would like to invite you to my latest initiative, the parkrun!

What is Halls parkrun, Nelspruit?

Halls parkrun, Nelspruit is a FREE weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 8am at Halls Gateway, Mataffin, Nelspruit.

The course is 5000m (5K) long and has been accurately measured by us with a professional measuring wheel. The course is on the Halls Estate and consists of a mixture of tarmac and trail pathways. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan.

Aside from you, a committed runner, it offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active as well, so please invite your friends and family to join you. I want to encourage people to walk, jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE!

Taking part is easy – just register before your first ever parkrun on our website: http://www.parkrun.co.za/halls/ Print your barcode and attach it to your shirt with pins. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning, bring along your printed barcode and get yourself there!

Every week we grab a post parkrun coffee in Wimpy Halls Gateway - please come and join me! Maybe swap stories about your walk or run that day, chat to other walkers and runners over a cup of tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running community.

So whether you are a new club member or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, please come along and join us.

•    This is a 5km run - it's you against the clock.
•    When is it? Every Saturday at 8:00am with the official parkrun launch scheduled for the 14th of December with Bruce Fordyce.
•    Where is it? It's run in Halls Gateway, Mataffin, Nelspruit.
•    What does it cost to join in? Nothing - it's free! but please register before your first run. Website: http://www.parkrun.co.za/halls/
•    Only ever register with parkrun once. Don't forget to bring a printed copy of your barcode (request a reminder). If you forget it, you won't get a time.
•    How fast do I have to be? We all walk/run for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace!

Should you have any other queries, please visit the website (http://www.parkrun.co.za/halls/) or give me a call, Tracey,  on 072 600 4119.  I look forward to seeing you there!!

Halls parkrun, Nelspruit needs you!
